Course Objective: This course is designed to give the new inspector a good understanding of the International Residential Code and how it relates to the other “I” codes. It will also help the student understand how to read the building code and interpret confusing tables.

Method of Evaluation:A series of pre and post progress tests and reviews are used. The student will also be provided a series of worksheets that help demonstrate how related tables and code sections interact. Interactive instructor lectures will help the student understand proper code interpretation and avoid common mistakes in the field.

Day 1

    Permit applications, inspections, CO's
  • Building Design–
    Wind, Seismic, Snow, Frost, Termites,

Day 2 

  • **Progress quiz & review
  • Foundations-- Concrete basics, Soil Conditions
  • Framing (floor/ walls/ roof)-- 
    Span Tables, Collar ties, etc.
  • Masonry- Solid or Hollow Masonry?
    Limits of masonry
  • Roof covering- Sheeting and weather protection 

Day 3

  • Progress quiz & review
  • Fireplaces, Chimneys--Sizing and clearances
  • Residential (prescriptive ) Energy Code
  • Insulated Concrete Forms
  • Steel Framing-  What is a KIP?
  • Progress quiz & review
