The costs for Chapter 1 and Chapter 17 building inspection services for school projects usually average between three-quarters to one percent of the total cost of construction. Of this cost, fifty to sixty five percent is attributed to Chapter 17 inspections. This is an existing normal cost of construction without paying the expense of hiring Chapter 1 inspectors. The cost for Chapter 1 inspections usually average thirty-five to one-half percent of the total cost of construction. Alleviating upfront construction and design problems and code violations prior to the completion of the construction will more than pay for the cost of these inspections. The cost for Chapter 1 and Chapter 17 building inspection services for state owned buildings is negotiated with the Office of the State Engineer on a two-year contract. The most important thing to remember, independent third party inspections are the last chance the owner of a building has to unsure the safety of the building through code compliance. These inspections will save the more in construction costs repairs than the cost of the service.
